This happens sometimes when the dog's saliva interacts with the Sheep Horn, because the chew is a direct animal part that contains natural protein. If the odor is too much for pet parents, we recommend outside chew sessions with the Sheep Horns. Pet parents can also wash, dry and place Sheep Horns in the freezer for a few hours to kill off the germs from the dog's saliva.

However, we recommend selecting the appropriate size of chew stick based on your dog's size and chewing habits to ensure they can properly enjoy their chew. If your dog is more on the aggressive side of chewing, consider choosing our more durable wood chew, Briar Root.

CANOPHERA Coffee Wood Chew Sticks are recommended for dogs 6 months or older, and we always recommend supervising your dogs while they chew. Additionally, it's essential to choose a chew stick size appropriate for your dog’s age and size. If your dog is under 6-months of age, consider the CocoToys as they are a much gentler option for baby teeth!

Depending on the strength and speed of the chewing, pieces or flakes can come off of our chews, as they are all-natural wood after all. The great part about the coffee wood is that the dog's saliva softens the wood pieces, making them flexible and digestible. The smaller pieces that come off the coffee wood are digestible in small amounts. The larger pieces that come off, please pick up and discard. Like with any chew, monitor your dog at all times when chewing.

Some dogs are really aggressive chewers that need an even more durable material than our award-winning CANOPHERA coffee wood chews, so we decided to add the briar roots from of briar wood to our lineup.

Compared to our native or backyard wood species, coffee wood is characterized by its extremely dense fiber stucture. The property makes it particularly resistant to mechanical stress, such as that which occurs during chewing. Nevertheless, larger pieces can break off from the chew stick if it is overstress. These should then be removed. In this case, we recommend using the next larger size or a harder material such as the Briar Root or Antler.

The wood of the coffee plant, coffea canephora, is called coffee wood. This caffeine-free wood is a by-product of coffee cultivation and is a natural raw material obtained during the rejuvienation of coffee plantations. This ecological cycle guarantees the sustainable extraction of our raw material, as every tree removed is replaced by a young coffee plant. In addition, the by-products are reaused instead of being disposed of. Perfect upcycling!
